Welcome, entertainment enthusiasts, to a cultural overload firmly rooted in empowerment, jubilation, and community building. Juneteenth – a historical date marking the emancipation of enslaved African Americans – is no longer merely a day on the calendar but an occasion for unity, celebration and resistance. Actor turned activist Kendrick Sampson’s organization BLD PWR, alongside other partners, is set to make Juneteenth a time of cultural communion with a two-day event in Houston aptly named Build Power Day x Juneteenth.
This celebration is a hearty blend of rally, block party, and spiritual revival. It aims to uplift the Black diaspora’s narratives of creativity, joy, and political resistance through an assortment of events– block parties, film screenings, town halls, and afterparties. Kendrick Sampson, the mastermind behind BLD PWR, emphasized the importance of reclaiming spaces, narrating uplifting stories, and fostering the Black community’s joy and justice. Recognizing Black liberation’s need in today’s time of eliminating Black narratives, the actor called this event a cultural communion.
Executives from associated organizations share the same sentiment. SisterSong’s Executive Director, Monica Simpson, reflected on the importance of building collective Black liberation through powerful narrative-shifting cultural tools. The event allows a platform for unity, organization, and mobilization, crucial during times when rights, freedoms, and communities are under constant attack. To top it off, this event is an official stop for the national movement-centered Road to Essence tour, known for promoting Black health, wealth, and justice.
The two-day affair, held at The Ion, Savoy, and Soiree Event Space, promises to be a kaleidoscope of activism, education, and celebration. Added features include experiences like The Session: R&B Jam, hosted by SisterSong, emphasizing Black maternal health.
Commenting on the trauma of historical oppression suffered by Black people, Kirsten West Savali, Vice President of Content at IOne Digital, stated how the collaboration of BLD PWR and SisterSong symbolized the face of abolition and intersectional work. She stressed their efforts in combating white supremacy and oppression impacting Black women.
Juneteenth, first marked in Texas in 1866, has over the years, transformed into a national celebration of Black liberation and recently, a federal holiday. Build Power Day x Juneteenth, accordingly, serves as a timely reminder of the joy and ongoing struggle for real freedom in Black communities tackling the rattles of encroachments on cultural expressions, civil rights, and bodily autonomy. This event signifies that joy is a radical act that should be taken up with each stride towards true freedom. Here’s to the Black joyous revolution brewing in the heart of Houston!
We’ve got block parties, film screenings, food trucks, DJ sets, poetry readings, and more lined up! So make sure to mark your calendars, because this isn’t just a moment, it’s a true cultural movement. Come, join the celebration and brace yourself for this momentous movement!
P.S. Don’t forget to check out the upcoming birthday party for our grand old Uncle Sam!
