Queen of the boxing ring Claressa Shields brought a serious dose of drama to the 2025 BET Awards on Monday, June 9, as she found herself on the shady side of the stage. You ask why? Well, honey, our girl got schooled in the “win some, lose some” lesson when she lost the Bet’s Sportswoman of the Year award to WNBA’s reigning diva, Angel Reese.
While nobody doubts Angel is a true queen on the basketball court, Miss Shields wasn’t shy about showing her disapproval of the final decision. She even took a little trip to Tweet Street and expressed her dissatisfaction. The “oops-she-did-it” list this year boasted names such as Dawn Staley, A’ja Wilson, Sha’Carri Richardson, Simone Biles, Flau’Jae Johnson, Coco Gauff, and Juju Watkins, but it was Reese who clinched the trophy.
Our girl, Shields, had a moment of disbelief, letting her fingers slip: “I don’t know how I didn’t win the Sportswoman of the Year for the BET Awards but congrats to Angel Reese and all the other nominees. I just thought accolades mattered.”
And ain’t she got a point? The Olympic champ Mz. Shields is the only boxer to hold at one time, all the four major world titles – WBA, WBC, IBF, and WBO – in three weight classes, making her a superstar in her own right. Don’t get me twisted, Reese’s got game, yo! I mean the girl’s got a 2023 NCAA women’s basketball championship and a Most Outstanding Player award under her belt.
But Twitter is Twitter and the fans were quick with the clapbacks. The replies spilled with shade, darling, but Shields was unphased. She held all her cards high: “Ain’t nobody saying Angel Reese don’t have accolades or she not good…I’m saying I thought the person with the “MOST” accolades & accomplishments would win the awards,” she defended her stand.
Girl’s got grit! She even threw some love Reese’s way, proving there’s no beef between these two athletes, just a fire to compete: “I’m team Angel Reese. I have mad respect for her and all the other female athletes that excel in their sport.”
