Gather ’round honeys, it’s time to spill the piping hot tea straight from the “ATL”. The Peach City was on fire lately as it played host to the oh-so-fabulous Sundresses & Seersuckers weekend. Oh, it was a scene to behold with perfect sundresses billowing and men in their seersuckers serving major score. And we’re not just talking about your regular Joe—celebrities, politicians, Divine Nine fam, all flocked the lawns with utmost style and a dollop of purpose.
What you ask, started as an intimate shindig, has morphed into a multiple-day extravaganza celebrating all that is beautiful about our Black excellence and strategically crafted philanthropy. All orchestrated by the suave men of the Delta Mu Mu chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Sundresses & Seersuckers took over Atlanta’s Home Depot Backyard with four days of fun, flair, fashion, and a purpose. The crowd, in the thousands, was graced by big names including Atlanta’s Mayor, Andre Dickens, media maven Big Tigger and Texas Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett. Major!
Amid the glitz, groove, and grit, it was the fraternity’s heart that made the event remarkable. Some quick numbers for you – since 2009, they’ve poured over $700,000 into scholarships through the Commitment To Excellence (CTE) Foundation. And that’s not all. “Sundresses & Seersuckers isn’t just a party honey, it’s a funding genie for initiatives like our Black Rhinos mentorship initiative”, says Patrick C. Daniel, Chairman of the CTE Foundation.
Daniel and frat brothers Larry Rasberry and Wendell Span, all revered HBCU alumni, highlighted that the event evolution has been a strategic one, always linked to their mission. Remember, kids – every good party has a great afterparty, and in this case, it’s creating a movement for excellence, inclusivity, and community growth.
Wendell Span confessed his favorite features of Sundresses & Seersuckers are not the party, the vibe, or even the money. Mmm-mm, it is the thrilling journey to adapt, evolve, and enhance the fest based on community feedback. They are listening, y’all!
So what does the weekend include? All the things, my darlings! Day parties bustling with jiving music, empowering panels led by Black doctors, energetic workouts, and unique kick-off events. And of course, donations are always welcome to contribute towards scholarships, health programs, and mentorship.
